Jean Charlier de Gerson (1363 - 1429) was a French scholar, educator, reformer, and poet, chancellor of the University of Paris.
A major theme of his time was the division of the Catholic Church (schism). Gerson joined initially for moderate reforms and opposed the convening of a council, which was to settle the rival popes in Rome and Avignon. Then he looked through his writings (De potestate ecclesiae, De unitate ecclesiastica, De auferibilitate Papae) back and positive action to overcome the schism, especially at the Councils of Pisa (1409) and Constance (from 1414).
