Stumpf, his doctoral thesis was on the calculus of variations. Husserl became professor of philosophy at Göttingen and Freiburg, but lost his professorship in 1936 because of his Jewish ancestry. Husserl is considered the founder of phenomenology, by which he sought to establish philosophy as rigorous science.
